Your shop's miscellaneous charge (many shops call it Shop Supplies) normally applies to everything on an invoice. You can switch it off for individual catalog items, for example a subcontracted job, a diagnostic fee, or a service you buy in from someone else.

Go to Inventory > Products, open the product, and click Edit. Scroll to the Miscellaneous Charge section and tick "Never charge [your charge's name] on this product". Save.

What it does

  • The product still bills at its normal price. Only the miscellaneous charge changes.
  • The item stops counting toward the charge however the charge is set up: a percentage of labor, a percentage of products, or a percentage of the whole invoice subtotal.
  • Exempted products show a "No Misc Charge" badge at the top of the product page, so you can see at a glance which items are set this way.
  • If your charge is a flat dollar amount per invoice rather than a percentage, there is no base for one product to be left out of, so the setting does nothing until you switch to a percentage. The product page tells you if that is your situation.

What it does not do

  • It does not change any invoice that has already been written. Ticking the box on a product you have sold before leaves every existing invoice exactly as it is, including open and unpaid ones, and taking a payment on one of them does not restate it either. Only invoices created after you tick the box are affected.
  • It does not cover labor typed straight onto an invoice with the + Labor button. That is not a catalog item, so there is nothing to hold the setting, and it always counts toward the charge. If you want a labor service exempt, add it to your catalog as a labor item and tick the box there.

The charge itself is set up in Settings > Invoicing, under Miscellaneous Charge. That is where you name it, choose what it is a percentage of, and decide whether it is taxable.
