Standard discounts are your shop's own named discounts, like Military 5%, LEO 10% or VIP $50. You set each one up once, and staff pick it from a list on the invoice instead of typing an amount, so the rate is always the one you set.

Setting them up

Owners and Store Managers go to Settings > Discounts (under Point of Sale). For each discount:

  • Name: whatever you call it. It prints on the customer's invoice, with the percent beside it, so keep it to 30 characters. Two discounts cannot share a name.
  • Type and Amount: Percent off, or Dollars off.
  • Comes off: Whole invoice, Parts only, or Labor only. Parts only leaves labor and shop charges at full price; Labor only does the reverse. A dollar amount never takes more than the parts (or labor) come to.
  • Always needs manager approval: for discounts that are a judgment call, like VIP. A manager has to approve it every time, even for staff who can normally apply standard discounts, and nobody can approve their own.
  • On: turned off, a discount stays on the invoices that already have it but is not offered on new ones.

Delete removes a discount nobody has used. One that is already on invoices is turned off instead, so its history and the Discounts Given report keep its name.

One per invoice

An invoice can carry one standard discount. A birthday or anniversary special counts as one. Typed discounts and sale prices do not count, and a standard discount comes off after any sale price. To allow more than one, turn on "Allow more than one standard discount on an invoice" on the same page. With more than one, percents add rather than compound: 5% and 10% take 15% off.

Who can apply them

The "Apply standard discounts (and approve them for others)" permission, in the Invoicing group under Managers > Permissions, lets someone add a standard discount on their own and approve one for someone else. Owners always have it, and Store Managers and Sales Managers start with it. Office Managers, salespeople, installers and installation managers start without it: they can still pick a standard discount, and a manager approves it on the spot. See "Applying a Discount on an Invoice, and Manager Approval".

Worth knowing

  • Renaming or changing a discount never changes an invoice already written. Each invoice keeps the name and rate it was sold at.
  • A whole-invoice discount comes off parts, labor and your misc charge (like shop supplies) together.
  • Tax is taken after the discount, on what the customer actually pays for each part of the invoice.
